If there's one thing I'm an expert at, it's photographing black dogs. Since my dog, Riley, is my most frequent subject I am well versed in capturing all of his expressions in many different lighting conditions. So when Jessie's mom contacted me and said she could never get a good photo of Jessie because she was black, I knew I could help her.
I met Kathy and Jessie on a chilly October morning at Shawnee Mission Park. Kathy had warned me that as a rescue dog Jessie could be skiddish around strangers. I came armed with pepperoni and patience and after only a few minutes of praise and tasty rewards Jessie was my new best friend.
We started off with a few stately shots of Jessie in her fabulous checkered winter coat and then transitioned to the more playful purple bandana. With lots of treatos and little play breaks we were able to capture Jessie in all her sweet and happy puppy glory. And with careful shooting and editing I was able to bring out the details of her every expression without losing the luscious color of her fur.
There is a way to photograph every dog, cat or snake regardless of coloring, training or behavior quirks. I am always willing to work with you and your pet to find the best way to produce beautiful portraits that capture their personality and your shared relationship.
